Dave Sheldon – Vancouver Giants
October 22, 2008

Edmonton AB – Edmonton AB – Tyson Sexsmith has tied the WHL record for shutouts in a career with his twenty-first, as the Vancouver Giants whitewashed the Edmonton Oil Kings 6-0. Sexsmith, playing in front of family and friends as he hails from the Calgary suburb of Priddis, Alberta, turned aside just ten shots in the victory, but made them count as Edmonton had a couple of great chances late.

Sexsmith ties the WHL record set by Brian Bridges of Seattle and later equalled by Everett goalie Leyland Irving. It took Sexsmith just 134 games to equal the record, while Bridges accomplished the feat in 213 games, Irving in 215.

In the game itself, Vancouver scored twice in each period and dominated from whistle to whistle. Mikhail Fisenko had a pair of goals in the win, with Craig Cunningham, Evander Kane, James Henry and Brendan Gallagher also potting markers. Vancouver outshot the Oil Kings 33-10 on the night.

The Alberta swing continues on Friday as the Red Deer Rebels will host the 8-0-0-3 Giants. You can hear all the action on SUPERHITS 650 CISL at 6 p.m., with the puck drop at 6:30 p.m.
